In Witchblade, NYPD homicide detective Sara Pezzini comes into possession of the Witchblade, a fictional, mysterious, supernatural artifact with awesome powers, and struggles to master its powers. Sara was born in 1971. After her father was killed in the line of duty, she was kidnapped by her child psychologist. Her attacker was a perverted female. Sara was 13. She went on to graduate from police academy in 1993, started at New York precinct #18, which was her father’s precinct, promoted to Detective in 1995. It is later revealed that she gets a kick from bacchanal parties, and from dangerous situations. She is a big fan of Michael Madsen. Her partner, Michael Yee is killed in #01. Befriended by Lara Croft and The Magdalene. Transferred to precinct 1 issue #87. Sara is a slob, living on beer and takeaways. Her fridge contents, in her words, would “embarrass a frat boy”. Every once in a while, when the universe isn’t needing her to hold it together, she feels a nagging feeling that she should have a boyfriend, and reaches out to whomever is closest at the time, but this is always only a fleeting moment, as she has no time for any commitments.
There have been many spin-off titles, which place the Witchblade in other times or settings and in the hands of other heroines, ranging from a pirate woman to Joan of Arc.
