Like Marvel Comics' Sub-Mariner, Aquaman is an undersea hero originating from the mythical kingdom of Atlantis. In the most well-known version of his origin (see the Silver Age Aquaman section), he is Arthur Curry, the son of a human lighthouse keeper and an outcast queen from Atlantis. Arthur Curry grows up slowly learning about his powers and origins and vows to defend the oceans and their inhabitants as Aquaman, becoming the ruler of Atlantis and the undersea world.
Aquaman possesses the abilities to breathe underwater, communicate with and control via telepathy all forms of sea life, and swim at fast speeds. He also possesses superhuman levels of strength, speed, endurance, and durability, all by-products of his body being adapted to survive unprotected in the tremendous pressures of the ocean depths. Also, since Aquaman is able to dive to extreme depths and resurface at high speeds with no apparent ill effects, it can be assumed that he is immune to the effects of nitrogen narcosis and decompression sickness.
Aquaman was a minor but durable hero during the Golden and Silver Ages of comic books, appearing in back-up stories of comic book series which headlined other characters such as Green Arrow in More Fun Comics (#73–107), Superboy in Adventure Comics (#103–284), Batman in Detective Comics (#293–300), and the Superman and Batman team in World's Finest Comics (#125–139). As one of the few superheroes extant in the late 1950s in DC Comics publications, he was made a founding member of the Justice League of America, which granted the character further longevity.
